Tennis – and the sun – returns to Portugal!
The American ‘sunshine double’ is complete, and as the days lengthen and the warmth returns, so the tennis world turns its attention to Europe and the clay court swing.
It promises to be a fascinating period given what the ATP and WTA Tours have brought us so far in 2019. On the men’s side, there have been 20 tournaments, with 19 different winners. The only man to win two? You guessed it, the ageless Roger Federer.
The women’s tour has seen the breakout of a new star, Canadian Bianca Andreescu. Taking her first title at Newport Beach in January was one thing, but winning in Indian Wells was quite another, particularly as she beat Garbine Muguruza and Angelique Kerber – both former world number ones – en route to the trophy.
What does all this mean for the clay? The biggest story is undoubtedly Federer’s return to the surface after a three year break. With Rafa Nadal also likely to be back – after more injury problems – many hope the two giants of men’s tennis will face off again.
One of the clay court tournaments closest to our hearts here at Annabel Croft Holidays is the Estoril Open in southern Portugal. Held above the beautiful coast of Cascais, it’s only a short trip from our tennis holidays resort at Pine Cliffs on the Algarve.
Held this year from 27thApril – 5thMay, it is always a fantastic occasion and will feature a world-class field, with the likes of Australian Open semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, Fabio Fognini and Gael Monfils among those in the draw.
Helped by this tournament, tennis in Portugal continues to flourish. We are lucky that our home at the stunning Pine Cliffs resort benefits from 300 days of sunshine annually, meaning we can welcome players all year round who wish to play and practice the game on holiday. We have five floodlit tennis courts – two clay and three hard – as well as one padel court, and our qualified coaches provide a range of courses for both adults and children which are a great way to improve your tennis. All of this is surrounded by the landscaped gardens of the resort and the beach a short walk away!
